Adverse Effects of El Nino to Real Estate in Kenya
Roads that have been in existence for years were rendered unusable as the heavy waters plunged right through them, leaving impassable and unusable features.
Rain can be a source of blessings as well as a catastrophe in equal measure. As the saying goes, too much of everything is dangerous. The environment, therefore, needs a moderation of the rain for the well-being of all, living and non-living. The El Nino rains that have been recently experienced in the country have had adverse effects on human life as well as infrastructure. From roads to houses to the bare earth.
Many roads were destroyed as a result of the rains. Roads that have been in existence for years were rendered unusable as the heavy waters plunged right through them, leaving impassable and unusable features. The government noted that they could not be permanently repaired immediately due to the damage but would be repaired temporarily to allow the transportation of food to affected communities. It has therefore been established that they will be permanently repaired afterwards when there is adequate time.

Secondly, areas with poor drainage, like the coast, were flooded almost at the onset of the rains. Roads were left impassable to the extent of water reaching a waist height and sometimes a neck height. This meant that full-grown human beings could not walk on the road without a section of their bodies being immersed in the water. It also caused a catastrophe for cars that fought hard not to lose control and be submerged in the water. Many houses in such areas were left flooded and inhabitable.
Buildings have also experienced their share of problems, with buildings collapsing and sinking and some construction sites having to come to a halt. Many people were left homeless as their houses collapsed due to the heavy rains. Other houses began sinking as the earth beneath them could not withstand the effects of the heavy rainfall. All these instances have left some dead and others injured.

In conclusion, it is safe to say that some of these ordeals could have been avoided if the government had listened to meteorological experts. It is evident what havoc rain can wreak and as such, should not be ignored. Enough safety measures should be taken in preparation for such times to save lives as well as the infrastructure.
