Real estate investment and especially in rental units in the city, Nairobi can be quite a lucrative venture when done well, and Kenyan celebrities have taken on this challenge to ensure the proceeds supplement their showbiz income.
1. Mwalimu Rachel
Comedian and Radio presenter Mwalimu Rachel recently explained how she managed to build four housing units while sharing tips on personal financial growth. According to her, to build her first two houses, she had to top up her car loan and construct the other two units with the rent money coming in as well as her savings and side hustle money. She further states that during that period, her salary and side hustle money was paying off the loan.

Noting that it takes a lot of discipline when it comes to money, saying all the cash she collects for rent goes into a Sacco. “I do not touch that rent at all. Discipline.
“I then got another loan from the Sacco to upgrade my car. Now, the initial car loan that I had topped up to build the units is being serviced by my salary (which bear in mind has also increased with time), and my current Sacco loan is being serviced by my four houses,” says Rachel, who then takes a swipe at the current education system, saying students should be taught about studying and understanding money instead of algebra.
Rachel encourages youth to start saving and investing early, saying, “10 years from today you will thank yourself for doing these things that don’t make sense to many people.”
2. Nyota Ndogo

The coastal songbird told a Kenyan publication that she had invested Ksh10 million into two-bedroom rental units in Kaloleni, Voi.
"I have built five of such houses to rent them out. I'm almost done. It has been a long grueling but satisfying journey," Nyota Ndogo stated.
Nyota explained how she came about this much money to invest into the rentals.

"Many people think just because I'm married to a mzungu - Henning Nielsen, I would crave a lavish life. That is far from it, my desire is to be financially stable. Most girls always crave for a lifestyle that is out there, from living in a house in Nyali, driving big cars... and all that, but that is not me.
"If I wanted, I would have lived a fancy life in Nyali like most girls but for me, that is not my goal. I asked my hubby to help boost my investments to make the rentals dream actualize. Now, here we are,” the Watu na Viatu star mentioned.
Boss lady is known to love the luxurious life. Akothee happens to be a landlady who owns a luxury apartment complex located in the opulent suburbs of the North Coast region.
Akothee through her Instagram shared that owning a home is not just hype for it is a getaway for long-term and short-term financial success.

She said that through Home Equity or fair market value which increases over time, you are able to build your personal wealth based on the renovations that you make to your home to suit the real estate market.
