Located along the Nairobi-Kangundo road approximately 50 kilometers East of Nairobi the Koma Rock shrine is a place of prayer and meditation for Christian pilgrimage.

Kamba elders would converge at Koma Rock to offer sacrifices to their gods a shrine locally known as Ithembo meaning holy place. Apart from sacrifices they would pray for protection from calamities.

Currently, the shrine is a pilgrimage site and belongs to the Catholic Church. At the top of the shrine, a sculpture of the dead Jesus Christ in the arms of his mother Mary is 70ft.

The shrine has no fence around it or blockades making it accessible to everybody. There are no writings inscribed on the rocks and no charges for taking photos at the site.

There is a big fig tree standing on the rocky way leading to the entrance, a spot where they offered sacrifices in the past.

Strange things have characterized the place since time immemorial. It is said that in 1830 a Kamba man by the name of Mwithi lived on top of the hill with his family to keep watch on Maasai invasions. His wives could report that they saw a young white woman holding an infant.

During the construction of the Kangundo-Nairobi highway in 1970 by the Mowlem Construction Company, the Kamba elders were reluctant to have the shrine moved to pave way for the road construction.

However, it is said that they later agreed after being offered a bag of sugar and two goats for appeasement. The move didn’t work as the blasting machines kept breaking down only on this spot.

An Israeli contractor living on the site also reported strange wailings of a child at night and the mother assuring the child that the rock would always be their home. The engineers had to away with the route for an alternative route.

From the top of the hill, the abandoned road is still visible as it goes through the Koma rock plains towards the city.
