Agrotourism

Fred’s Ranch is the home of organic foods and all the food that is sold is grown there. The well-utilized 15-acre land uses drip irrigation with the main focus being on agro-farming and dairy farming.

They have the following crops mangoes, avocadoes, pawpaw, lemons, tangerine, and pixies, and vegetables (managu, spinach, carrots, and capsicum).

Obachi credits son

The veteran presenter has credited his son Victor Machoka for conceptualizing and marketing the ranch as well as keeping things running smoothly. Victor, who has a degree in hotel and tourism management is the ranch’s, Managing Director.

The difficult journey

In an interview with one of the local media houses, Obachi narrated the difficult journey he had when setting up his ranch. In 1993 he bought a 50-acre parcel of land in the remote part of Kajiado and many people thought that he was crazy. He later sold 30 acres of the land to pay off a Ksh.1.6 million loan that he took from the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) which by the time he was clearing, had already accumulated to Ksh. 7.5 million because of interest.

The Roga Roga Show host opined that he learned the hard way when his first batch of dairy cows had bought were stolen when he already had set up structures for them. Due to this, and his accumulating rent in Nairobi, Obachi decided to relocate to Kajiado to fully monitor his farm. Upon relocation, he realized that the biggest challenge was the lack of water, and buying water was also unsustainable, he then switched focus to drilling a borehole, which offered numerous opportunities for farming at the ranch.

His ranch has attracted high-profile guests including former president Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.
