Nairobi has been ranked at position 80 out of 100 cities in the world as stressful to live in. This survey was conducted by Care Vaay, a German based company. The The 100th representing the most stressful city.
To come up with this report 4 categories were looked at; governance (safety and security, socio-political stability, gender and minority equality), city (density (persons/km2), traffic congestion, weather, air, noise and light pollution), finances (unemployment rate, financial stress and social security) and citizens’ health (mental health, access to healthcare and covid response stress impact).
Nairobi, at position 80 scored a total of 56.1 out of a total score of 100 with strengths in weather and gender equality.
However, Nairobi scored low in many of the parameters that include air pollution, financial stress, high unemployment rate, covid response stress impact, safety and security. On population density, Nairobi has 6, 318 people/km2.
Johannesburg and Capetown in South Africa took the lead in Africa as the least stressful at position 49 with 75.5 and 51 with a score of 75.2 respectively. Other cities included Algiers in Algeria; 78 with 58.3, Casablanca, Morocco; 79 with 57.1, Dakar, Senegal; 84 with 53.8, Cairo, Egypt; 88 with 49.5, and Lagos Nigeria; 99 with 19.9.
Reykjavik in Iceland is the least stressful city in the world at position 1 with a score of 100. The city scored 100 in gender equality and 98.8 in safety and security.
Mumbai in India was ranked the most stressful city in the world at position 100 with a score of 1.0.
