The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) stated that they intend to start rehabilitation and improvements of sections of Mombasa Road which were damaged during the construction of the Nairobi Expressway.

The repair is noted to cost Ksh9 billion and will be done within the next 2 months. The process will be done by the operator of the Nairobi Expressway, Moja Expressway Company Ltd, through their engineering company, Procure and Construct (EPC) Contractor CALE Infrastructure Construction Limited.

KeNHA mentioned that the repair will include the recarpeting of the existing tarmac, fixing the drainage system, and establishing infrastructure for a Bus Rapid Transit (BTR) system.

They will also fix damaged pedestrian walkways, set up additional street lighting, and construct additional pedestrian footbridges.

This move comes after the construction of the Nairobi Expressway chipped away some lanes of Mombasa Road, leaving it narrower and increasing traffic congestion in the lower deck. The construction also limited pedestrian access due to motorists often using the walkways during rush hours.

Furthermore, Murang’a-Kangema and Murang’a-Kiriaini-Othaya roads located in Murang’a County have been upgraded to national status for the purpose of rehabilitation and maintenance works.

The roads were previously under the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), a state corporation mandated with the development and maintenance of the rural road network in the country, to which Ksh 21.8 billion has been allocated. The institution is then to disburse Ksh62 million in every constituency.

The rehabilitation of the road is noted to be a factor that will spur the country’s real estate sector to the next level. It will cause a boost to the performance of the industry in the county.
