Kenya's Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) Services to Commence in June 2022
The method of payment will be cashless through the use of special toll payment cards that will be recharged through MPesa Paybill or an authorized vendor.
Acting Director-General for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Francis Gitau has announced that passengers will be charged Ksh. 150 to use the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT).
The buses will start operating in June 2022 along Thika Road line 2 as a pilot program with 100 buses. Thika Superhighway has already been marked for the BRT.
The Ksh.150 flat rate will be for passengers using Kasarani- Kenyatta National Hospital line in a move to decongest the city.
At the moment those traveling from Kasarani to Kenyatta National Hospital must use two buses; from Kasarani to CBD then from CBD to Kenyatta National Hospital.
Mr. Gitau also said that the fare policy for the system will be in zones that are distance-based.
The method of payment will be cashless through the use of a special toll payment card.
The card will be loaded with points and passengers will be required to tap at termini’s in each corridor before boarding.
The cards can be topped through Mpesa Paybill or authorized vendors.
Other lines apart from the Kasarani-KNH are Kenol-Rongai, Ngong Road-Juja, Balozi-Imara and Mama Lucy-T-Mall.
The government projects to launch 6 BRT corridors in Nairobi with priority for JKIA-Likoni, James Gichuru-Rironi and Bomas-Ruiru.
Buses that use petrol and diesel will not be part of the BRT project as a way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
