The Historical Bishop Tucker Building at Uganda Christian University
The building was built to teach men and women church ministry the reasons why it is called the historical Bishop Tucker School of Divinity and Theology.
The historical Bishop Tucker building at Uganda Christian University (UCU) is as precious as gold that attracts someone’s curiosity at first sight and I am among those people.
The first time when I entered the main campus of UCU in Mukono-Uganda, from the small gate heading toward the finance office, my eyes were amazed by the nature, greens that give you fresh air and at the same time you will see the amazing building called Bishop Tucker, vraiment attrayant!
UCU has different buildings named after various people but the unique one is the Bishop Tucker building that was named after the British Bishop Alfred Tucker, who was able to reach up to Uganda according to Prof. Christopher Byaruhanga, the dean of the faculty of theology.
“We call him the first because he was the only one who reached Uganda, the person who was supposed to be the first was killed in Busoga; another one died of fever on his way to Uganda,” he said.
“Alfred Tucker was a Bishop of the diocese of the church of Uganda from 1890-1911; due to his service, the friends of Bishop Tucker and Uganda had to raise money to build a memorial building when he retired in 1911. He went back to England and passed away in 1914,” he added.
"The building’s architecture has a form of the letter E, on the last extreme is the chapel that was built in memory of the man who died in Kisii- Kenya", said Byaruhanga.
In the middle, there is a short shape kind of arm where the office of the vice-chancellor is located currently but in ancient times, it was where the principal’s office used to be.
And the other extreme is called the principal’s hall that hosts the names and pictures of people who were principals at Bishop Tucker’s Building.
The building was built to teach men and women church ministry the reasons why it is called the historical Bishop Tucker School of Divinity and Theology.
Vraiment interessant! It felt like walking in history while am alive just from hearing the story of the past reason why I call it the impressive historical Bishop Tucker building.
