Relief for Nairobians as China Square Reopens
China had said a non-arbitrary and non-discriminatory investment environment is vital to the healthy development of bilateral practical cooperation between the two countries.
Popular China Square Supermarket has reopened after a week-long closure.
The retail store, located at UniCity Mall along Thika Road, has reopened after talks between the Kenyan government and the Chinese Community reached an understanding over the opening of the mall that caused an uproar among local traders.
The Chinese Chamber of Commerce noted: “The Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce welcomes the good news on the resumption of operations of China Square this follows several engagements between the Kenya Government and the Chinese Community in Kenya to reach an amicable solution to the stalemate and cooperation.”
China had said a non-arbitrary and non-discriminatory investment environment is vital to the healthy development of bilateral practical cooperation between the two countries.
Wu Peng Director-General, Department of African Affairs, MFA, China said that through collective efforts, the cooperation will also benefit Kenya.
He mentioned: “I welcome the statement by Korir Sing’oei. A non-arbitrary & non-discriminatory investment environment is vital to the healthy development of bilateral practical cooperation. I believe that through collective efforts, China-Kenya cooperation will better benefit both peoples.”
The enterprise closed down last week following an uproar that it is availing cheap products causing immense competition to local traders.
The criticism also came from the Trade CS Moses Kuria who asserted that as much as Kenya welcomes Chinese investors, they were here as manufacturers and not traders. Adding that he had held talks with the Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof Paul Wainaina on the shop’s lease.
"I have today given an offer to Prof Wainaina the VC Kenyatta University to buy out the lease for China Square, Unicity Mall, and hand it over to the Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa and Eastleigh Traders Association," he said.
