One of the fundamentals in fighting coronavirus and ensuring the well-being of Kenyans is access to clean water, especially for the people living in vulnerability.

The advertisement and promotion in all media platforms stressed on the use of clean water and soap in washing hands regularly to stop the spread of the virus, but are all Kenyans able to access clean water in their area of living?

It is very ironic that 70% of all the water abstracted from freshwater bodies in the country is used for irrigation.

The pandemic has just but strengthened the need for good sanitation, hygiene, and adequate access to clean water for each and every individual in this country.

• Management of water supply.

Increasing degradation of rivers, wetlands, aquifers, and their catchment is one of the areas we are slow to develop and improve in.

In the second phase of its work, Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) rolled out its project to improve the quality of the rivers within Nairobi as well as the sanitation surrounding the rivers themselves, in order to achieve clean water access and improve the sanitation of the individuals accessing this river.

The project which is totally funded by African Development Bank operates by assessing water quality, monitoring water quality together with the assessment of Nairobi city and satellite town rivers as a process to manage the water sources and increase clean water access.

• Contamination of water.

The pandemic has increased the consumption of water, in that everyone is expected to wash their hands regularly to keep the germs away and stay dehydrated but still Kenya has a disability for access of clean water to each of the 50 million of its citizens another reason for the rapid spread of the virus in highly congested places.
