Fire Breaks Out in Gikomba Market Again
Just a few hours after the court granted the Nairobi Metropolitan Services to remove some of the traders in the Gikomba market, a section of the market was up in flames.
The traders whose stalls were affected could hardly save whatever was left of their merchandise as the fire started at night. The fire spread faster as the market stalls mainly consist of wooden structures. Property of unknown value was destroyed by the fire which cause is yet to be established.
Gikomba market has been affected by fires almost every year. This year alone, today's fire is the third one after the fire gutted down part of the market in August and October and even though some were minor incidents, property was destroyed and the traders sources of livelihoods were cut off.
The affected traders have condemned the arson attack claiming that bales of cloths among other business stocks have been burnt and yet some were acquired through loans which they still have to pay.
The eviction of traders by the NMS is supposed to open the way for the expansion of the Pumwani Majengo Dispensary.
