Kenya's Nairobi expressway is nearing completion and the contractors are not leaving anything to chance as they currently beautifying the construction with plants.

Beautification of the Nairobi Expressway is the final stage of the construction, ahead of its grand opening by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Julia Odenyo, the Deputy Director of Kenya National Highway Authority (KenHa) told journalists that floriculture exercise is meant to absorb vehicle emissions and also give a lovely experience to road users

“The plants will help the structure blend in with the environment and give road users a softer architecture experience,” she opined.

The flowers, grass, and plants are embedded on pipe cubes which are then fitted on the road beams, a process that is expected to be complete by March 2022

Mrs. Odenyo stated that the planted trees would be necessary for absorbing the carbon dioxide generated by vehicles.

The plants, contained in a porous material, are placed inside the pockets. “We have a landscaping team that will water and replace the plants if need be. The plants will be watered every two days manually before we establish a self-sustaining watering mechanism.
