Konza Technology City, known as Konza Technopolis, is a new city under construction in Machakos City. It has been in development for 13 years, and they plan to finish by 2030.  It will be self-sustaining in a green environment. It aims to be an innovation centre for technology and investments, a research center, and an education centre.

So far, 80% of the vertical infrastructure in phase one of the project is done. That basically means the construction of roads, water, electricity, solid waste, and other amenities built in a world-class state. The area is in a water-scarce location, so the sewage is a waste water reclamation facility. It collects the waste, treats it, and reclaims 95% of the water.

The Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology is a graduate-only university that provides an opportunity for research and coming up with ideas. It’s being mentored by the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. They will enrol students who want to do research on science, engineering, technology, and mathematics at the graduate level.

The new CEO, John Paul Okwiri, aims to finish this project in time—that's by 2030. He aims to accelerate Konza`s impact on the country and also enhance the digital economy by providing an environment for innovation to take place. They are headed to phase two of the project, which is going to be heavily done by investors to build residential homes, businesses, schools, and whatever project they have in mind. The government will also be supporting businesses by creating a regulatory environment.

Kenyans are urged to invest heavily in this. The project is still ongoing and is set to put Konza Technopolis on the map as a smart city in Africa and even globally.
