Siaya County is endowed with numerous tourist and cultural attractions and is keenly playing a role in the Western Kenya tourist circuit.

In this article, I have put together some of the things to do in Siaya and around. I have a hunch that if you include this County in your travel plans, you will be glad you did so.

Lake Kanyaboli National Reserve

This is one of the best places to visit in Siaya. It is the second largest ox-box lake in Africa.

It is sandwiched between Yala swamp and Akara hills.

Major attractions to see here include; different species of birds/endemic birds such as the papyrus gonolek, papyrus canary, papyrus yellow warbler and Caruthers cisticola. The rare sitatunga antelopes are also spotted here.

Visiting Lake Kanyaboli accords you the opportunity for bird watching adventures, fishing expeditions and picnics.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum

The Mausoleum is a community-based museum situated in Bondo, at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s homestead.

It was established as a sign of honor and remembrance of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice President.

Attractions here include several Luo artifacts and the late Jaramogi’s books, awards and other artifacts. It is more of a cultural center where you can visit to acquaint yourself with the rich culture of the Luo’s.

Kogelo cultural center

Kogelo is the hometown of Barack Obama, former president of the united states of America.

It is a showcase of culture that depicts the humble beginning and originality of Barack Obama, who is arguably the world’s greatest political leader.

The cultural center also preserves the rich culture of Luo community through display of Luo artifacts and traditional homesteads.

Sauti Kuu Foundation Resource, Culture and Sports Centre

This is the platform for the disadvantaged children and young people that allows them uncover their strengths and realize their full potential to independent successful lives.

The center was opened by former Us President Barack Obama on 16th July 2018.

Got Ramogi hill

The sacred hill is located in Yimbo. It serves as a point of unification for the Luo’s who usually gather at the place to celebrate their cultural uniqueness.

There is also a shrine located within the hill , where the Legio Maria followers conduct their prayers.

EL Molo Crocodile Park and Lodge

It is a budget-friendly lodge crocodile park located in Uhanya, Siaya county.

It is an ideal destination for backpackers, campers, family getaways and team building activities.

Accommodation is offered in 2 cottages and a 6-bedroom house. You can also visit the place to acquaint yourself  with the life cycle of different species of crocodiles.

Ndanu Falls

The scenic waterfalls are located about a kilometer from Siaya town.

The breathtaking falls are surrounded by a beautiful vegetation that attracts different species of birds and numerous rocks are in the place.

It is a favorite destination for sightseeing and bird watching adventures.
