Measures to Put in Place to Protect Construction Workers during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Even though little is said of them, it is hard to imagine real estate without construction workers. They are the silent workers in the background, whose noise is louder in their work and accomplishments. Construction workers cannot work from home, hence the need for them to be protected during the Corona season.

This is a two-way effort, the workers themselves need to protect themselves and their employers also have their part to play.

  • Educate them on the Dangers of the Virus

Rather than tell the workers that Covid-19 is a serious virus, make them see how dangerous it is, and in which way it can affect them personally. Make them see how the virus works, how it attacks the respiratory tract, how it can lead to death, and most importantly make them know that they can infect their family members and other people. Ensure that the workers are well informed for them to be serious about their own safety.

  • Ensure They Follow Government Directives

The government of Kenya has put certain directives to curb the spread of the Coronavirus. Although some of them are obvious, employers must ensure that the rules are followed, and they are to provide the necessary equipment for this to happen. Construction workers may not bother washing their hands often if water and soap are not provided. Employers should leave no room for excuses. Workers need to wear masks, maintain social distance, they should be encouraged to carry packed lunch, or food can be provided at the site.

  • Isolate Those with Underlying Medical conditions

Isolating those with preexisting medical conditions does not mean that they are to be sent home. It means giving them extra space and attention. They can work in a specific area, and they should be provided with their own equipment, which should not be shared. They can be given days off if a positive case has been identified, then once the situation is under control, they can get back to work.

  • Be Ready and Prepared to deal with the Positive Corona Cases

The employer needs to have a Covid-19 preparedness plan to deal with the unexpected. If a construction worker has any signs or symptoms associated with the virus, they should get tested. If the results are positive, they are to be given due medical care. Contact tracing within the construction site should follow to determine if the virus has spread further. Others who exhibit the signs and symptoms should be isolated until they are tested.

The employer can also provide training on how to ensure their own safety. The workers can also be encouraged to use mobile money rather than handle cash. The workers need to know that it is their sole responsibility to take care of themselves and they should not place the whole burden on their employers.
