This is the largest and oldest hospital in Kenya. It is also the  teaching hospital of the university of Nairobi college of health sciences. It was built in 1901 With the bed capacity of 40,as the Native Civil Hospital.

Right now the hospital is at a bed capacity of 1800 .It has 50 wards,22out patient clinics,24 theaters,16 of which are specialized and Accident and Emergency Department.
Out of 1800 beds,209 are for the private wing.

The Kenyatta National Hospital is hoping to raise sh.17 billion from the private sector to fund the construction of the country's 1st paediatric hospital. KNH targets to build a 600-bed children hospital at the cost of Ksh.5 billion. Right now KNH has a 200-bed capacity children ward.

As it seeks to raise funds for the children hospital, it is also targeting to raise the sh.4billion needed for it's ICT plan.This will help the hospital to automate its operations to improve efficiency.

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital sought approvals to begin work on a new Ksh.28 billion Facility that could be the largest hospital in Africa once complete. Currently,MTRH has a 1000 -bed Facility. The proposed new hospital will have a bed  capacity 4,000: Beating South Africa's Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital which has 3,400 beds.
